November 2008
This month, the observance of Veterans Day provides Americans an excellent opportunity to reflect upon the service and sacrifice of men and women in our armed forces. Through powerful personal storytelling, two momentous WETA co-productions airing in November on WETA Television and nationwide on PBS offer a sense of the stakes for those who serve in harm's way.
The first, Medal of Honor, spotlighting those who have earned the nation's highest award for valor in combat, explores astonishing stories of courage, dedication to duty, and sacrifice. The film is the fruit of a partnership between WETA, filmmaker Roger Sherman and our production partners at the Washington Post Company. It was created with funding from The Boeing Company, whose support we greatly appreciate. The other film is THE WAR, directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick. This monumental 16-hour documentary about the American experience of World War II, conveyed through the perspectives of a handful of ordinary men and women of that era who served on the battlefront or lived on the home front, riveted audiences nationwide when it premiered to critical acclaim last September.
I hope you have an opportunity to tune in to these two important films. Thank you for your support of WETA.
